ReplyDeleteWhen you really think about it, Twilight-as-Royalty was alluded to as far back as Episode 2 for the mere fact that her Element manifested as a crown while everyone else's are necklaces. In other words, she's a Princess and the others are her Court. Alicorn or not, I think her character arc was always intended to have her end up having some grand destiny.
Plus there's all the fanfics that were written with this premise, so it's not as if this wasn't ever thought of before.
The thing that bothers me (and some other people) in this episode is the seeming massive contradiction about cutie marks and what they represent. We've learned that all they are, basically, is a symbol of what a pony excels at. You have to both have and realize a talent before they appear (of which the CMCs are blind to the latter).
The roughly 2:30 preview clip I watched today, however, seems to imply that cutie marks are the source of talents *and* that they also compel the pony to do said talent even against their will. I could be (and hope I am) interpreting it wrong and that there's much more to it that I haven't seen, but it makes it look like a pony's entire life is determined by their cutie mark whether they like it or not (instead of the cutie mark being determined by their life, as what's been taught over and over again until now).
Oh, and the preview clip is mostly a song as well, so there's (at least) three songs in this one episode alone since Celestia is supposed to sing in one of them. A musical episode, pretty much.
"The Cutie Mark Song" which you speak of does seem to have the cutie marks 'controlling' the ponies as you say, but let's humor ourselves and play along by saying that it's all part of Twilight's accidental spell that not only swapped the cutie marks but make the cutie marks 'control' the destinies of said ponies. Would that make sense? So let's say this is all part of Twilight's spell. Or we can just be all 'who are we kidding?' and say that this supposed episode of continuity epic fails at continuity in terms of cutie marks.
DeleteCelestia singing, even if a bare minimum could begin to make up for what she did to Twilight during the Season 2 finale, but there's still a fat chance of that in my eyes. If it's not a solo part and it's just blended in with backing vocals like with the song in "Hearth's Warming Eve" and "Apple Family Reunion", it won't potentially count in my book as Celestia singing for the first time. I have to be able to hear Nicole Oliver sing like hearing Cathy Weseluck as Spike sing. Or whoever is providing Celestia's singing voice, I don't care. If I don't hear it, it doesn't count.
Hey listen, dude. I really wanna thank you for sticking with me throughout Season 3 as I ran these critiques. We had quite a bit in common. I felt like we were both in this together, though I sought to learn what makes a show worthy besides its superior animation. I might do Season 4 should it come, mainly because it might be interesting to see how Hasbro and the show's staff could potentially come up with anything beyond the main character's 'end of a journey'.
