Dragon Quest
Twilight and her friends get together to watch this great dragon migration, minus Fluttershy due to her fear of dragons.
Spike soon realizes he's not like other dragons and despite the others telling him it's not a bad thing, he storms off in a huff simply because no one is taking him seriously. That's kinda stupid because in case anyone forgot, Spike is still technically a baby dragon and is not meant to be taken seriously.
And as I recall, when he became massive in size in "Secret of My Excess", he was dangerous and felt bad after realizing how much damage he did to Ponyville.
So why he even questions his own origins is really the complete mystery here, not the fact that he doesn't know where the hell he came from. Since Twilight obviously can't answer his questions, Spike decides to set out on his own to join the other dragons during the migration, which could be quite possibly the stupidest thing he's ever done thus far.
Cranky Doodle Donkey makes a cameo appearance with his old toupee somehow and is apparently back to be grumpy, though possibly because he's doing Spike a favor he didn't ask to do.
After what appears to be days of traveling, he arrives at a volcanic crater and finds a group of young adolescent dragons, thinking he can try his luck with them. Of course what he doesn't know yet is that Twilight, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash are secretly following him in a dragon costume that "guess who" designed.
Now among these younger dragons is this gang leader named Garble, the seventh antagonist in the series so far, and apparently he and his motley crew act like typical teenagers in the sense that they bully others and go looking for trouble. Garble decides to have Spike prove himself worthy as a dragon in a series of contests. Yeah, good luck with that.
It isn't until he survives a belly flop trying to do a lava cannonball. Good lord, dragons can survive lava? What next?
Well, when the dragons decide to go on a raid for phoenix eggs, Spike is not too thrilled with the idea, but gives Garble the benefit of the doubt anyway. They end up with one egg and Spike is ordered to smash it, which he refuses.
That's when Twilight, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash ditch their costume and stand their ground to the dragons. But of course, they know they're no match for them, so they escape with the aid of Twilight's teleportation magic spell.
Spike accepts his friends as his family and writes his third letter to Princess Celestia on the friendship lesson he learned. And the episode ends when his egg hatches and he names the newborn phoenix Peewee. So I guess this means even Spike has a pet now.
You know, despite Rarity showing the most amount of affection towards Spike she's ever shown so far in this episode, it still leans more towards the friend zone, never mind that she knows Spike has a crush on her and that he dreamt of her in the previous episode. So again, there's still plenty of doubt that their relationship will improve any further than shown in "Secret of My Excess". Oh, well. At least Spike is here to stay.
